Bendigo and District Aboriginal Co-operative provides a range of health, wellbeing and family and community services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members on Dja Dja Wurrung Country.  

BDAC is excited to be opening its own Kindergarten in 2023, to provide Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children with three year old and four year old Government funded kindergarten programs.  The curriculum will incorporate Aboriginal culture, language and customs.   

 

The Position

This exciting new role will manage the BDAC Kindergarten to foster a learning environment that engages Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children and provide them with a positive start to their education in a culturally safe environment.  

Upon commencement, the successful candidate will be responsible for helping to establish the Kindergarten in its brand new building.  This will include consulting with community and families, seeking accreditation and service approval and program funding, appointing staff, developing the curriculum and managing enrolments.   

Once established, this role will be responsible for managing the Kindergarten as the Nominated Supervisor.  It will also be responsible for all business-related aspects including staff management, accreditation and quality standards, health and safety, risk management, and managing funding agreements and budgets, with support from BDAC Corporate Services.  It will be responsible for overseeing the education of all students and ensuring families and children are well-supported, with the support of an Educational Lead.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing the effective running of the Kindergarten, including overseeing curriculum development and teaching, staff management and resourcing, accreditation and quality standards, health and safety, risk management, funding agreements and budgets.
  • Assist BDAC to attain accreditation and service approval by ensuring all Government requirements and regulations are met, during the establishment phase of the Kindergarten.
  • Assist with obtaining Government funding streams for the Kindergarten and manage these on an ongoing basis
  • Oversee the establishment of the Kindergarten including acquiring resources, appointing staff and developing the student enrolment process.
  • Oversee the development of a community-based kindergarten curriculum, drawing on Aboriginal heritage and culture.

  • Develop relationships with the Aboriginal community and engage with members and Elders to provide a strong connection for children to Aboriginal culture and country.
  • Ensure the Kindergarten complies with the National Quality Framework (NQF) and applicable legislation across all related areas.
  • Ensure the Kindergarten provides high-quality education that meets or exceeds the NQS.

 

Key Selection Criteria 

  • Previous experience in a business management role, including managing staff and budgets;
  • Understanding of, and experience working in, an educational setting;
  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities or Aboriginal children;
  • Understanding of the NQS and related regulatory standards and requirements;
  • Ability to develop strategic initiatives focused on continuous improvement
  • Ability to problem solve and effectively respond to concerns or conflict;
  • Experience in accreditation and audits;
  • Demonstrated commitment to risk management principle

 

Your skills and experience

To be considered for this role, you must have: 

  • Significant experience in a business management role and/or tertiary qualification in Business Management (or related field)
  • Tertiary qualification in education (desired)
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal Culture
  • Project Management experience
  • Knowledge of the NQF and NQS
  • Viable financial early years modelling experience
